Softball
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) of the softball team and senior Richard Jackson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) of the men’s track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University athletic department has concluded the 2009-10 academic year ranked No. 42 out of more than 300 eligible Division II institutions in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings. The Owls finished among the top-20 percent in the standings for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s finish also marked the third time in the last four years that the Owls have placed in the top-15 percent in the standings.

The Southern Connecticut State University athletic department hosted its annual Senior Awards Event on Wednesday night at the Michael J. Adanti Student Center. More than 70 senior student-athletes were recognized for contributions to their respective programs. In addition, several special awards were handed out. The field hockey team was awarded the Tim Greer Insurance Agency, Inc. Community Service Cup. The volleyball squad was recognized as the winner of the Academic Team of Champions Award, given annually to the team with the highest team cumulative grade point average. Sarah Darst of the gymnastics team was named as the Female Scholar-Athlete Award winner, while Greg Malen of the baseball team was the Male Scholar-Athlete Award winner.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Following an extensive search involving members of the campus and Greater New Haven communities, ‘Otus’ has been selected as the mascot nickname for the Southern Connecticut State University Owls. Individuals were invited to submit name suggestions throughout the month of March. More than 100 names were suggested, but Otus was the unanimous choice of a search committee that included representatives from the athletic department and the general campus community.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Approximately 200 individuals participated in the National Marrow Donor Program’s ‘Be The Match’ initiative on Thursday at Southern Connecticut State University’s Moore Field House. Spearheaded by the Owls’ football program, university faculty, staff and students between the ages of 18-60 took part in the event. Student-athletes and coaches from the football team helped participants through the process with assistance from SCSU athletic training staff members and representatives from the NMDP. Student-athletes from 18 of the Owls’ programs participated in the ‘match’ portion of the event.

04.28 | General, Women's Basketball, Men's Swimming
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Student-athletes from the Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving and women’s basketball programs worked with youngsters at the Clinton Avenue School in New Haven on Wednesday. SCSU student-athletes worked with first and second grade students at the school on reading, grammar and rhyming and vocabulary review in both small and large group sessions.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Members of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s basketball team concluded skill work with youngsters at the Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club on Monday night. The Owls had been assisted with the club’s weekly Sports Night Event during the month of April. The student-athletes conducted an array of fundamental drills before coordinating an intrasquad game.
