NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) of the softball team and senior Richard Jackson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) of the men’s track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May.

Gymnastics Team Breezes Past West Chester, Improves To 6-0
Justine Basley captures All-Around in 182.975-172.225 victory
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Justine Basley (Danielson, Conn.) captured the All-Around with a score of 37.225 to lead the way for the Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics team in a convincing 182.975-172.225 victory over West Chester University on Saturday afternoon. The Owls captured first place in all four events and improved to 6-0 on the season with the victory.

Senior Erika Pysh (Plainville, Conn.) also contributed with victories in the floor exercise (9.475) and balance beam (9.575). Basley, who also won the vault with a score of 9.35, was joined by teammate Sarah Darst (Tampa, Fla.) as individual winners. Darst scored a 9.5 on the uneven bars.

In addition to her first place finish on the vault, Basley also finished second on the floor exercise and uneven bars.

As a team, the Owls strung together numerous impressive finishes to pull away for the win. SCSU posted the top five finishes on the floor exercise and uneven bars and three of the top four finishes on both the vault and beam.

Southern Connecticut’s other second place finish on the day came from Briana DiPinto (Woburn, Mass.), who finished just behind Pysh on the beam with a score of 9.375.

The Owls are back in action tomorrow when they take on Yale and Bridgeport at Yale. SCSU defeated both teams last week in a six-team competition at Springfield College.
