Three Members Of Women’s Soccer Achieve NE-10 Honors; Mallico Named Freshman of the Year
11/1/2008 7:04:26 PM
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In just her first year with the Owls, Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) led the women’s soccer team to an 11 win regular season, earning Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, a Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference selection and a spot on the Northeast-10 All-Conference Rookie Team. Junior teammate Ashley Knight (Rockland, Mass.) was also named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team and Gina Della Rose (Prospect, Conn.) was awarded to the Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team.
Mallico led the team with six goals and recorded five assists on the season, giving her a total of 17 points. She ranked among the top-10 in points per game and total assists in the Northeast-10 Conference. Furthermore, Mallico tallied four game-winning goals, including two in overtime victories against conference opponents. In addition, she was named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll Five times this season, and named NE-10 Freshman of the Week for the week of Sept. 28. Her innovative play on the field made everyone on the field around her better and will be an invaluable asset for seasons to come.
Knight anchored an Owl defense that only allowed 12 goals all season, recording a 0.73 goals against per game average. Not only a defensive talent, she tallied three goals on the season, all of which were game-winners. All-Conference honoree for the third time in her career, Knight provided great leadership for this year’s team.
Former 2005 NE-10 Freshman of the Year, Della Rose had an outstanding season recording four goals and one assists for a total of nine points. She was fourth on the team in total points and goals scored and earned two Northeast-10 Weekly Honors throughout the season.
The Owls will take on the Penmen from Southern New Hampshire on Nov. 2 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
