Knight, Mallico Earn Daktronics East All-Region Honors

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two members of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s soccer team have been named to the Daktronics East All-Region Teams. Junior Ashley Knight (Rockland, Mass.) has been selected to the First Team and freshman Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) have been named to the Second Team for their performances throughout the 2008 campaign, voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The two athletes led the team to an overall record of 12-5-2, their best season since 2001.
Knight, an All-Northeast-10 First Team Honoree, played outstanding defense for the Owls this season. Knight and the Owl defense allowed just 14 goals this season, posting a microscopic 0.72 goals against average. Without a doubt, Knight was the defensive leader of the squad, however contributed greatly to the offense as well. She recorded three goals on the season, all three of which were game-winning goals. Her last goal to the season came with just four minutes remaining against St. Anselm College in a 0-0 tie, propelling the Owls to a much needed victory on the road.
Mallico, the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, had a remarkable start to her career as an Owl. The midfielder from Milford, Conn. recorded a team-leading six goals and five assists on the season. Mallico, a talented and creative player with and without the ball, proved to be an invaluable asset for the Owls, especially late in close matches. She tallied four game-winning goals throughout the season, including the game-winner in overtime against Le Moyne College. Her four game-winning goals placed her in a tie for third place in the Northeast-10 Conference.
