NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Keyed by first-place finishes in three of four events, as well as the All-Around, the Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics team moved to 13-3 on the year with a sweep of Ithaca College and Rhode Island College on Sunday. The Owls totaled a 188.600, nearly three points better than Ithaca’s 185.925. Third place RIC tallied a 170.400.

In addition, the Owls also set a new program record for a team score on the vault. SCSU posted a 47.2, which was just ahead of the old mark of 47.05, set at the 1999 USA Nationals.

Freshman Justine Basley (Danielson, Conn.) claimed the All-Around with a score of 37.950. She also captured the vault with a mark of 9.55 and finished second on the beam with a 9.475.

Other individual event winners included senior Erika Pysh (Plainville, Conn.) and sophomore Taylor Murray (Islip, N.Y.). Pysh took the floor exercise with a 9.8, while Murray led the field on the beam with a 9.55.

In addition, Sarah Darst (Tampa, Fla.) and Briana DiPinto (Woburn, Mass.) each tallied a second place finish for the Owls. Darst scored a 9.6 on the bar, while DiPinto registered a 9.525 on the vault.

DiPinto (floor exercise) and Murray (bars) also recorded one third place finish.

The Owls are back in action Sunday for a four-team competition at SUNY-Brockport. In addition to those two clubs, Ithaca and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will also take part in that meet.
