NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Matt Anderson hit 3-for-5, scored twice and drove in a run on Tuesday afternoon against the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team to lead No. 6/8 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce to a 9-0 victory in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the loss, SCSU falls to 10-10 (0-1 NE-10), while Franklin Pierce improves to 14-2 (1-0 NE-10).

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Scott Savastano reached with a two-out single to center field. He moved to third when SCSU junior starting pitcher Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) committed a throwing error while attempting a pickoff. Savastano then came into score an unearned run when Kevin Renaud reached on an error.

The Ravens lengthened the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Anderson singled down the right field run and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Jake Christman worked a walk, Derek Ingui followed with a triple to right-center to plate both runs.

Franklin Pierce created the 9-0 final by scoring six runs in the top of the sixth. The big blow in the inning was Steve Carr’s run-scoring double to the gap in left-center. The Ravens also picked up runs in the frame on an Anderson single up the middle, a single through the left side by Kyle Cabral, an Ingui single to right-center, a single to left by Savastano and a Kevin Rivers fielder’s choice.

Cox got the start on the hill and took the loss (2-2) for SCSU. Over 5.1 innings, he gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits, walked two and struck out five.

Mike Adams started and picked up the win on the mound for Franklin Pierce. Over six shutout innings, he surrendered three hits, walked four, hit two batters and struck out six.

The Owls return to action on Thursday, March 27, when they make the return trip to Franklin Pierce for a Northeast-10 contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Pappas Field in Rindge, N.H.
