ST. LEO, Fla. – Junior centerfielder Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) and senior Anthony Fiorillo (New Haven, Conn.) each went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in on Monday to lead the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team to a 7-3, neutral-site, non-conference victory over St. Anselm at Southard Stadium. Melvin Perdue hit 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs for St. Anselm. With the win, SCSU improves to 5-3, while St. Anselm falls to 1-3 with the loss.
SCSU opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first. Junior shortstop Mike Diaz (Monroe, Conn.) led off the game with a single to centerfield then stole second and third base. After junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) drew a walk, Derbacher singled to right field to score Diaz and move Bowerman around to third. Fiorillo followed with a single to left field which scored Bowerman to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.
St. Anselm would cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Perdue led off with a single to centerfield and moved to second when Ben Gunn drew a walk. Perdue would then move to third on a flyout to center and come into score while Gunn was involved in a rundown after getting picked off of first base.
SCSU broke the game open with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Diaz again kicked off the inning, this time with a double to left field. He then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bowerman and came around to score when Derbacher reached on an error. Fiorillo followed with a triple to centerfield to bring Derbacher all the way around from first and extend the lead to 4-1. Senior left fielder Billy Hite (Wallingford, Conn.) then laid down a squeeze bunt which scored Fiorillo from third base to give SCSU a 5-1 lead.
The Hawks inched closer with a run each in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Alex Aguilar led off with a walk which chased SCSU junior starter Justin Cox (West Haven, Conn.) from the game in favor of freshman reliever Bryce Bjorklund (Branford, Conn.). Aguilar moved to second as Evan Kelleher reached on an error by Bowerman at second. Both runners moved up on a groundout by Matt Sucharewicz and Aguilar would score to cut the lead to 5-2 on an RBI groundout by Tim Murphy.
In the eighth, Perdue led off with a double to center, moved to third on a groundout by Gunn and scored on a single to center by Ryan Gargan.
SCSU would salt the game away with two runs in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs and nobody on, Diaz knocked a double to left field and came in to score when Bowerman followed with an RBI double to center to create the final, 7-3 margin.
On the hill, Cox started, pitched six-plus innings and earned the victory (1-1) for the Owls. He gave up two runs on four hits, walked four and struck out three. Bryce Bjorklund allowed one run on two hits and struck out one over the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.
For St. Anselm, Matt Stone started, pitched 5.2 innings, gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked one, struck out four and took the loss (0-1).
The Owls return to the field on Wednesday, March 5 when they hold their home-opener against non-conference opponent Post. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn.
