NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore starting pitcher Jim Fuller (Marlborough, Conn.) turned in a sparkling performance on the mound as he struck out a career-high 19 batters over eight shutout innings to lead the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team to an 11-0 victory over Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference action at The Ballpark at SCSU. The win is the 14th in a row for the Owls and extends their school-record winning streak. With the win, SCSU improves to 32-15 (22-6 NE-10), while Stonehill falls to 23-21 (14-13 NE-10) with the loss.

The Owls opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior shortstop Mike Diaz (Monroe, Conn.) led off and bounced a single through the right side. He would steal second and later score on a double hammered down the left-field line by junior center fielder Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.). Senior designated hitter Anthony Fiorillo (New Haven, Conn.) followed and clobbered a two-run homerun over the wall in left-center field, his fourth of the season.

SCSU extended the lead to 4-0 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Fiorillo led off with a walk and moved all the way to third when Stonehill pitcher Matt Giusti threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt at first base. Freshman left fielder Billy Hite (Hopkinton, Conn.) followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to drive home the run.

The Owls again added a single run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 5-0 game. Junior third baseman Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) reached on a one-out single to right-center, moved to third on a double to right center by Diaz and came into score on a wild pitch.

SCSU pushed across five runs in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to 10-0. Cox had the big blow in the inning with a three-run double to right field. Also in the frame, DeProspo drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left and junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) knocked home a run with a looping single to left.

The Owls tacked on a final run in the bottom of the eighth to create the 11-0 final. With one out, senior first baseman Joe Kahlden (Norwalk, Conn.) reached with a double down the left-field line, moved to third on an infield single by junior third baseman Chris Barile (Holbrook, N.Y.) and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by sophomore shortstop Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.).

Fuller cruised through eight shutout innings on the hill to pick up the win (9-1) for SCSU. He gave up just one hit, walked one and retired 24 of the 26 batters he faced, including a career-high 19 strikeouts. He struck out the side in order in the second and fourth innings and struck out the side around an infield single in the third.

Matt Giusti started on the mound and took the loss (7-4) for Stonehill. Over five innings, he gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits, walked one, threw a wild pitch and struck out two.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, May 3, when they travel to Merrimack to conclude the regular season with a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Warrior Field in North Andover, Mass.
