Athletes of the Month
Men's Track
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and McNeil Johnson (East Hartford, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May. Both student-athletes earned All-America honors at the NCAA Track and Field Championships and were instrumental in leading their squads to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Daniel Haggerty (Albany, N.Y.) and junior Sutton Underwood (Norwalk, Conn.) won their respective events to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men’s outdoor track and field team to a fifth place finish at the New England Championships in Durham, N.H. this weekend. The Owls’ 50 team points led all Division II squads.

Haggerty led the team in track events with a victory in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The senior posted a time of 9:19.04 in the event.

In other track events, the 4x800 meter relay team finished third with a time of 7:45.13. Freshman Ryan Kachmarsky (Monroe, N.Y.) also netted team points for the Owls, placing sixth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.20 seconds.

Field event action was highlight by Underwood’s victory in the pole vault with a vault of 15’9”. Freshman Patrick Waszczak (Colchester, Conn.) joined him as a point scorer after clearing a height of 14’9” to place eighth.

Freshman Robert Golabek (Hamburg, N.Y.), sophomore Diwani Augustine (East Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Nicholas Fedor (Bethany, Conn.) also scored points in their events. Golabek was second in the shot put with a heave of 55’5”. Augustine’s distance of 47’6 ½” was good for third in the triple jump. Fedor took sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 146’4”.

On Friday, Junior John Brinley (East Hartford, Conn.) placed sixth in the hammer throw with a heave of 173’1” to put the team on the board.

The University of Rhode Island won the event with 122 points. The University of Connecticut claimed second place with 79 points and Sacred Heart University was third with 60 points. Williams College edged the Owls for fourth place with 52 team points. In total, 37 teams recorded points at the meet.

The Southern Connecticut men’s track and field team is back in action on Saturday for the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. Events begin at 11 a.m. and will continue through Sunday.
