Men's Track
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and McNeil Johnson (East Hartford, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May. Both student-athletes earned All-America honors at the NCAA Track and Field Championships and were instrumental in leading their squads to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Symone Wong (Laurelton, N.Y.), sophomore Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) and the 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Wong, freshman Sherri Gamberale (East Hampton, Conn.), senior Sonia Hill (Suffield, Conn.) and freshman Courtni Walker (Uniondale, N.Y.) all won events to lead the Southern Connecticut State University women’s outdoor track and field team to a third place finish at the New England Championships. The Owls’ 74 team points ranked them ahead of nine Division I teams and first among all non-Division I opposition.
Wong won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.14 seconds. Gamberale was third overall with a personal-best time of 12.40 seconds.
Taylor set a new program record the 400 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 60.76 seconds.
The 4x100 relay team notched an SCSU record time of 47.36 seconds en route to claiming its New England Championship.
In other track events, freshman Shaina Barr (Manchester, Conn.) racked up a pair of team points after finishing seventh in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.64 seconds. Seniors Sasha Mathelier (Freeport, N.Y.) and Keisha Regular (Norwalk, Conn.) finished fifth and sixth in the 100 meter high hurdles, posting respective times of 14.60 seconds and 14.74 seconds.
Sophomore Sasha Saylor (Hartford, Conn.) highlighted the Owls’ field action with a third place performance in the triple jump with a distance of 36’7 ¾”. Junior Yvonne Perkins (Danbury, Conn.) claimed fifth place in the shot put with a heave of 44’7”. Junior Dominique Burrell (New Haven, Conn.) took seventh in the event with a throw of 43’8”. Freshman Sharmaine Gregor (Niantic, Conn.) placed seventh in the discus throw with a toss of 134’2”.
On Friday, a pair of Owls field performers earned team points in early final rounds. Perkins placed fourth in the hammer throw with a heave of 163’5 ¾”. Mathelier cleared a height of 11’ to claimed fifth place in the pole vault.
In team scoring, Boston College won the event with 131 points. The University of New Hampshire was second among 31 scoring teams with 94 points. The nearest Division II opponent to the Owls was Northeast-10 rival Massachusetts-Lowell, which placed eighth with 32 points.
The Southern Connecticut women’s track and field team is back in action next weekend at the ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J. Events begin on Friday and will continue through Sunday.
