RINDGE, N.H. – Junior third baseman Chris Barile (Holbrook, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored on Sunday afternoon, but a rally by the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team came up short as the Owls were defeated, 6-4, by No. 20/29 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce to conclude the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The win gave Franklin Pierce back-to-back NE-10 tournament titles, as well as their third championship in four seasons. With the loss, SCSU falls to 36-17, while Franklin Pierce improves to 39-12 with the win.
After both teams left the bases loaded in the second, Franklin Pierce struck first with three runs in the top of the third inning. Scott Savastano led off with a line-drive single to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Matt Anderson, Steve Carr drove a single through the left side to drive home Savastano with the game’s first run, while Anderson and Carr took third and second, respectively on the throw to the plate. Cliff Hicks then drove a single to third base which Barile got just enough of his body on to keep the runners from advancing. However, Matt Skeffington followed with a bases-loaded double to the warning track in right field which drove home Anderson and Carr. Hicks was cut down at the plate trying to score from first on the play.
The Ravens extended the lead to 5-0 with two runs in the top of the fourth. Kevin Renaud led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Derek Ingui then crushed a two-run homerun to left-center field, his fourth of the season.
Franklin Pierce pushed the lead to 6-0 when Hicks led off the top of the fifth with a first-pitch, solo homerun off the foul pole down the left-field line, his fourth of the year. The homerun would chase SCSU junior starter Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) from the game in favor of sophomore reliever Kyle Penney (Columbia, Conn.).
SCSU got on the board and cut the lead to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, freshman left fielder Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) bounced a single back through the middle and moved to second when freshman catcher Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) looped a single into left-center. Back-to-back walks to senior right fielder Paul Izzo (Cohoes, N.Y.) and Barile forced home Babb with SCSU’s first run and chased Franklin Pierce starter Tom Cote from the game in favor of reliever Vinny Gemma. Sophomore shortstop Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) followed with a groundout to shortstop to drive home DeProspo. A walk to junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) loaded the bases for junior first baseman Mo Davidson (Winsted, Conn.) with two outs, but Gemma struck him out to end the inning.
The Owls would later slice the lead to 6-4 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Izzo led off, was hit by a pitch and moved to second on an infield single deep in the hole on the left side by Barile. Malen followed with a groundball to third which was thrown away by Skeffington at third. Izzo came into score an unearned run on the play to make it a 6-3 game, Barile went to third and Malen ended up on second. Two batters later, Davidson drove home Barile with a grounder back to the pitcher. Davidson reached safely at first when Carr muffed the throw, while Malen held at second on the play. The Ravens turned to ace pitcher Mike Adams out of the bullpen, who immediately threw a wild pitch and walked Derbacher to load the bases with one away. However, Adams got senior designated hitter Anthony Fiorillo (New Haven, Conn.) to pop up and Babb to ground out to cut the SCSU rally short.
In all, SCSU stranded 10 men in scoring position and left the bases loaded in the second, sixth and eighth innings.
Cox started on the hill and took the loss (6-4) for SCSU. Over four-plus innings, he gave up six runs on eight hits, walked five, hit a batter, threw a wild pitch and struck out three.
Cote started on the mound and picked up the win (4-2) for Franklin Pierce. Over 5.1 innings, he gave up two runs on four hits, walked six, committed a balk and struck out six. Mike Adams pitched a scoreless final 1.2 innings, gave up one hit, walked one, threw a wild pitch and struck out two.
The Owls now wait to see if they are selected to participate in the six-team NCAA Northeast Regional, which is scheduled for May 15-18 at a site to be decided. Participating teams will be announced later on Sunday. Check back at southernctowls.com for more details as they become available.
