Baseball Defeats Merrimack, 6-0, In Rain-Shortened Contest
Second game of doubleheader washed away
Boxscore

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Freshman catcher Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) has a key two-run double in the top of the second inning to lead the Southern Connecticut State University to a rain-shortened, five-inning, 6-0 victory over Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference play at Warrior Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was washed out and tentatively rescheduled for Tuesday, May 6 at 3:30 p.m. With the victory, SCSU improves to 33-15 (23-6 NE-10), while Merrimack falls to 18-26 (13-16 NE-10) with the loss.

The Owls opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Junior shortstop Mike Diaz (Monroe, Conn.) led-off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.). Junior center fielder Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) followed and lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive home the game’s first run.

SCSU extended the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the second. Junior first baseman Mo Davidson (Winsted, Conn.) led-off, was hit by a pitch and moved around to third on a double to right-center by freshman left fielder Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.). DeProspo followed with a two-run double down the left-field line to make it a 3-0 game. Three batters later, Diaz singled to center and drove in DeProspo.

The Owls took advantage of three Merrimack errors to push across a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth and create the 6-0 final. With two outs, Derbacher reached on an error by Merrimack shortstop Doug Heald. Derbacher then stole second and senior designated Anthony Fiorillo (New Haven, Conn.) worked a walk. Davidson followed and reached on an error by pitcher Chris Smith which allowed Derbacher to score and Fiorillo to move to third. The inning was then extended again as Babb reached on an error by second baseman Brendan Pyburn which allowed Fiorillo to trot in to score.

After five innings, the game was halted due to heavy rain. It was eventually decided the game could not be completed, which gave SCSU the weather-shortened victory.

Junior Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) tossed an abbreviated no-hitter to pick up the victory (5-3) for SCSU. Over the five shutout innings, he walked three and struck out six.

Mike Coppinger started on the hill and took the loss (4-5) for Merrimack. Over 2.1 innings, he gave up four runs on three hits, walked one, hit two batters and struck out three.

The Owls are tentatively scheduled to return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6 in the makeup game at Merrimack. If that game is not played, SCSU will return to action later next week in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Please check back at southernctowls.com for more details as they become available.
