Final Results
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Keyed by a quintet of top two event finishes, the Southern Connecticut State University women’s outdoor track and field team won its second straight Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. In all, it’s the third outdoor crown for the Owls and second in a row. The Owls also added another title after claiming the NE-10 indoor championship back in February.
Sophomore Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) took home Most Outstanding Performer honors after winning both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles. In addition, head coach Chris Covert earned Coach of the Year honors.
In all, the Owls won 10 events on the afternoon. They finished with 219.33 points, which was nearly 62 points better than second place UMass-Lowell.
The Owls earned the top three positions in the hammer throw and went one-two in the triple jump, 100 hurdles, 100 and 200 meters.
Yvonne Perkins (Danbury, Conn.) led the way in the hammer throw with a toss of 163 feet, six inches. Teammates Kimberly Dionne (Greenville, R.I.) and Sharmaine Gregor (Niantic, Conn.) finished behind her in second and third, respectively.
Courtni Walker (Uniondale, N.Y.) won the triple jump and was followed by Sasha Saylor (Hartford, Conn.).
Taylor won the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.59 and the 400 hurdles in 1.02.81. Sasha Mathelier (Freeport, N.Y.) was right behind Taylor in the 100 hurdles.
Symone Wong (Laurelton, N.Y.) was a double winner in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. She was closely followed by teammate Sherri Gamberale (East Hampton, Conn.) in both events.
Other event winners for the Owls included Keisha Regular (Norwalk, Conn.) in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 1 and ¾ inches, Mathelier in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, 10 and ¼ inches and Danielle Moore (Palmdale, Calif.) in the 800 meters with a time of 2.18.35. The Owls’ 4 x 100 relay team was also a winner.
The Owls also received second-place performances from Walker in the long jump, Perkins in the shot put, Gregor in the discus and Kelly Howard (Wallingford, Conn.) in the 10,000 meter.
In addition, the Owls also took home third place finishes from Saylor in the long jump, Dominique Burrell (New Haven, Conn.) in the shot put, Shaina Barr (Manchester, Conn.) in the 400 meters and Julia Ramos (Shelton, Conn.) in the 5000 meters.
The Owls return to action on May 9-10 for the New England Championships at the University of New Hampshire.
