NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – A single to center field by freshman left fielder Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) gave the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team the lead for good on Tuesday afternoon as it rallied from a 6-4 deficit with three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Merrimack, 7-6, in the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season finale for both teams at Warrior Field. Mike Andre hit 3-for-4 and drove in four runs for Merrimack. With the win, SCSU improves to 34-15 (24-6 NE-10) and extends its school-record winning streak to 16 games, while Merrimack falls to 18-27 (13-17 NE-10) with the loss.
The Owls opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior designated hitter Anthony Fiorillo (New Haven, Conn.) led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt while junior first baseman Mo Davidson (Winsted, Conn.) was safe at first thanks to a fielder error on the play. After Babb bounced into a fielder’s choice which saw Fiorillo erased at third, senior catcher Billy Hite (Shelton, Conn.) reached first on the second error of the inning to load the bases. After a wild pitch moved all the runners up and scored Davidson with the game’s first run, senior right fielder Paul Izzo (Cohoes, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single which drove in Hite and Babb to push the lead to 3-0. Izzo moved to second on a throw to the play on the play and would then score on a single down the right-field line by junior third baseman Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.).
Merrimack cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the bottom half of the fourth. With two outs, Jeff Bercume singled to center, stole second and scored on a single to center by Andre.
The Warriors would close the gap to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Coppinger led off with an infield single to third but was erased at second when John Katsetos reached on a fielder’s choice. After a walk to Ryan Shepard, Bercume knocked a double which scored Katsetos and moved Shepard around to third. Shepard was then driven in on a single down the right-field line by Andre.
Merrimack later took its first lead of the game at 6-4 with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Shepard reached on an infield single and moved to second on a single to right field by Bercume. Andre then made it a four-RBI day for himself by cranking a double into left-center field to score both runs and give the Warriors a 5-4 lead. Andre then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single to right field by Mike Dooling.
SCSU would rally for the 7-6 win with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Junior shortstop Mike Diaz (Monroe, Conn.) led off with a single to right field and motored around to third on a single to center by junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.). Junior center fielder Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) then clubbed a double to center field to drive in both runners and tie the game at 6-6. Two batters later, after Derbacher had moved to third on a fielder’s choice, Babb lined the decisive single to center to score Derbacher with what would prove to be the winning run.
Sophomore Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) started on the mound and did not factor in the decision for SCSU. Over seven innings, he gave up three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out four. Junior Mike Connors (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up the win (2-0) out of the bullpen for the Owls. He pitched a scoreless, hitless final 1.1 innings, walked two, threw a wild pitch and struck out three.
Ryan O’Rourke got the start on the hill for Merrimack and also did not receive a decision. Over five innings, he gave up four runs (one earned) on eight hits, walked one, hit a batter and struck out four. Chris Smith took the loss (2-1) for the Warriors. He faced two batters and did not record an out in the top of the ninth. Smith was eventually charged with the winning run, gave up one hit and walked one.
The Owls return to action on Friday, May 9, when they travel to Franklin Pierce for the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. SCSU will play at 4 p.m. at Dr. Pappas Field in Rindge, N.H. against the winner of Wednesday’s first-round contest between Bentley and Franklin Pierce.
