RINDGE, N.H. – Kevin Renaud cranked a pair of solo homeruns on Friday afternoon to lead No. 29/20 nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce to a 5-2 victory over the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team on the first day of the double-elimination portion of the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Championships. Senior right fielder Paul Izzo (Cohoes, N.Y.) hit a solo homerun for SCSU, which will face elimination on Saturday morning. With the loss, SCSU falls to 34-16 and has its program-record winning streak snapped at 16 games. With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 37-12.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning when Kevin Rivers led off the frame with a solo homerun to right field, his third of the season.
The Owls evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the first. With one out, junior designated hitter Chris Barile (Holbrook, N.Y.) reached first on a walk. Junior shortstop Mike Diaz (Monroe, Conn.) followed with a walk of his own and junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) bounced into a fielder’s choice which erased Barile at third and put runners at second and third with two outs. Junior center fielder Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) then lined a single through the right side of the infield to drive home Diaz from second.
The Ravens reclaimed the lead at 2-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Again it was Rivers, who this time knocked a two-out solo homerun off the flagpole beyond the fence in right-center field, his second dinger of the game.
Franklin Pierce extended the lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fifth. Cliff Hicks led off with a looping single to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Carr. Tyler Bishop followed with a line-drive single to right field to drive home the run.
The Ravens added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make it a 4-1 game. Carr led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Bishop and then came into score on a single to center field by Jake Christman.
Franklin Pierce pushed the lead to 5-1 with a run in the top of the ninth. Hicks led off with a solo homerun to left field, his third of the season.
SCSU created the 5-2 final with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Izzo led off the frame with a solo homerun to left field, his second of the season. Junior third baseman Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) then drew a walk and two batters later, Diaz singled to right to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. However, Bishop struck out Bowerman and got Derbacher to foul out to third to end the game.
Sophomore Jim Fuller (Marlborough, Mass.) started on the mound and took the loss (9-2) for SCSU. Over seven innings, he gave up four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Brian Maloney started on the hill and picked up the victory (7-1) for Franklin Pierce. Over seven innings, he gave up one run on five hits, walked three and struck out nine. Bishop pitched the final two innings, gave up one run on two hits, walked one, hit a batter and struck out two to chalk up his seventh save of the season.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, May 10, when they take on Pace in an elimination game at the Northeast-10 Championships. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Dr. Pappas Field.
