4x100 Meter Relay Team Claims First Place At Georgia Invitational
Quartet speeds to new SCSU record

ATHENS, Ga. – The 4x100 meter relay team consisting of seniors Larry Johnson (Stratford, Conn.) and Kevin Taylor (Bristol, Conn.), junior Tyrone Joseph (Norwalk, Conn.) and freshman Nana Ocran (Manchester, Conn.) won their event at the Georgia Invitational hosted by the University of Georgia on Friday afternoon. The foursome dashed to a Southern Connecticut State University outdoor track and field record with a time of 40.54 seconds.
The 4x100 meter relay team was first out of seven competing teams, narrowly edging the Fort Valley State University squad by less than one-hundredth of a second. The 40.54 second time broke the program record of 40.71 seconds set in 1985.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Joseph, juniors McNeil Johnson (East Hartford, Conn.) and Gary K. Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Román Henry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished third with a time of 3:15.75.
In other action, Henry and Pope finished fifth and seventh respectively in the 400 meter dash. Henry clocked in at 48.84 seconds, while Pope ran his lap around Spec Towns Track to the tune of 49.31 seconds.
Larry Johnson won his heat and finished 10th out of 30 competitors overall in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.54 seconds.
In the 100 meter dash, Ocran finished ninth with a time of 10.64 seconds while Larry Johnson finished 12th with a time of 10.71 seconds. In total, there were 27 sprinters in the event.
McNeil Johnson rounded out the day for the Owls, finishing fifth in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 52.18 seconds.
Members of the Southern Connecticut men’s track and field team are back in action on Saturday at the New England Championships, which began on Friday from Durham, N.H.
