Athletes of the Month
Men's Track
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and McNeil Johnson (East Hartford, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May. Both student-athletes earned All-America honors at the NCAA Track and Field Championships and were instrumental in leading their squads to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

Women’s Track And Field Starts Strong At New England Championships
Several Owls qualify for finals
DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Symone Wong (Laurelton, N.Y.) and sophomore Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) were both the fastest qualifiers in the preliminary rounds of their respective events on Friday to lead the Southern Connecticut State University women’s track and field team in day one action at the New England Championships at the University of New Hampshire.

Wong led the pack in the 100 meter dash with a personal-best time of 12.14 seconds. Freshman Sherri Gamberale (East Hampton, Conn.) won her heat in the event and was third overall en route to qualifying for the final heat with a personal-best time of 12.28 seconds. Though she did not qualify for Saturday’s final heat, Gamberale posted a personal-best in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.31 seconds.

Taylor was the fastest qualifier in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, posting a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 61.91 seconds.

In other qualifying action, seniors Sasha Mathelier (Freeport, N.Y.) and Keisha Regular (Norwalk, Conn.) earned the chance to compete in the final heat of the 110 meter high hurdles. Mathelier ran to the tune of 14.79 seconds in her qualifying heat, while Regular sprinted to a time of 14.83 seconds. Both runners recorded personal-bests in the event. Rounding out the Owls’ qualifiers was freshman Shaina Barr (Manchester, Conn.), who ran the 400 meter dash at a personal-best clip of 58.50 seconds.

In field action, a pair of Owls earned team points in early final rounds. Junior Yvonne Perkins (Danbury, Conn.) placed fourth in the hammer throw with a heave of 163’5 ¾”. Mathelier cleared a height of 11’ to claimed fifth place in the pole vault.

The Southern Connecticut women’s track and field team is back in action on Saturday for the second and final day of the New England Championships. Events will begin at 10 a.m.
