NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University volleyball coach Lisa Barbaro has announced the team’s captains for the 2008 season. Seniors Maria Arenas (Stratford, Conn.) and Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, Conn.) will serve in this role for the Owls this fall.
Arenas has been a steady contributor for the Owls over the course of the past three seasons. As a junior last fall, she played in all 37 matches for the Owls and ranked second on the team in digs (319) and third in aces (37).
Mendizabal will serve as a team captain for the second consecutive year. Last season, she played in all 37 matches for the Owls and ranked second in the Northeast-10 in blocks per game (1.17). Mendizabal also led the team in kills (339), aces (42), digs (375), blocks (155) and double-doubles (11). As a sophomore in 2006, she captured All-Northeast-10 Conference honors.
The Owls open the 2008 season on Aug. 28 for a road tri-match that will feature tilts against the New York Institute of Technology and Bloomfield.
