Winterbottom Nets Two Goals, But Owls Fall To St. Anselm, 6-5

Box Score

Despite two goals from sophomore Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team came up just short in its Northeast-10 contest at St. Anselm on Saturday, as the hosts came up with a 6-5 win over the Owls.

The Owls are now 1-3, 1-1 in Northeast-10 play. St. Anselm is 2-1, 2-1.

The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes of the contest, but Winterbottom answered just 37 seconds after the second marker to cut the lead in half.

Kelly Anne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) tied the game with eight minutes remaining in the first half, but St. Anselm scored just 1:41 later to carry a 3-2 lead into the half.

Jennifer Sousa (Hartford, Conn.) scored off a feed from McCafferty just 1:28 into the second half to even the score at 3-3.

St. Anselm followed with the next two goals of the contest, but the Owls got back within a marker after  Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) found the back of the net.

The Hawks restored their two-goal lead before Winterbottom connected for her second of the day with 4:39 left. Unfortunately, the Owls couldn’t net the equalizer.

The Owls are back in action on Wednesday when they host Stonehill at 7 p.m.
