Box Score
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The men’s soccer team encountered the University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The final score of this conference match was 5-1, improving the Owls to (2-2), while the Chargers fall to (1-2).
SCSU wasted little time scoring the games first goal. 11 minutes into the game, sophomore Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) flicked a ball over the defense, where Ian Serrao (Glastonbury, Conn.) hit a volley to the bottom left corner of the goal, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, Serrao struck again, by placing a shot into the bottom right corner on a pass from Djordje Jankovic (Sabac Serbia), increasing the lead to a two goal margin. Then with 26 seconds remaining in the first half, sophomore Jeremy Tavares (Waterbury, Conn.) added another goal off an assist from junior Patrick Carroll (Guilford, Conn.), giving the Owls a 3-0 lead.
In the second half of play, UNH scored in the 53rd minute cutting into the lead, making it a 3-1 Owls lead. Jelani Joslyn finished a pass from Jeff Lazzara, giving the Chargers their first goal of the game.
In the 76th minute of action, Templeton headed a cross from Jankovic into the bottom right hand corner of the goal, extending the lead to 4-1. Freshman Daniel Goldberg (Williston Park, N.Y.) would add another insurance goal in the 81st minute. Jankovic served another ball to the middle, where Goldberg struck a volley passed the Charger goalie, James Hilaire.
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) tallied one save for his second win of the season. Hilaire made six saves in the losing effort for UNH.
The Owls look for their third win in a row on Sept. 10 against the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
