SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) scored a game-high 18 points, as the Southern Connecticut State University women’s basketball team upended Le Moyne College, 68-64, on Wednesday evening at Ted Grant Court. With the win, the Owls improved to 2-0, 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference competition, while the Dolphins fell to 0-1, 0-1 in the league.

In the opening stanza, the Owls jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. With 4:45 left in the first half, freshman Ashley O’Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) connected on a lay-up giving Southern its largest advantage of the game at 14. Le Moyne battled back with a 10-4 run of its own, but Southern carried a 32-24 lead into halftime.

Smith led all scorers with 10 points in the first half, coupled with two assists and two rebounds for the Owls. Senior Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) chipped in with six points of her own, while Katie Hart, Muffy Sadler and Emily Bayly each recorded six points for the Dolphins.

The two teams traded baskets for the first part of the second half. Le Moyne cut the margin to three points at the 9:22 mark, but a Johannes three-point play capped off an 8-4 run extending the Owls lead back to seven with 7:34 remaining in regulation.

Once again, the two teams would exchange buckets down the stretch. The Dolphins pulled to within two points with just under a minute to play, but sophomore forward LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) would put the game out of reach. A lay-up and a free-throw gave the Owls a five point lead with 18 second left, eventually leading to a 68-64 victory on the road.

Smith finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, 4-of-4 from behind the arc, hauled in three rebounds and dished out six assists. Johannes netted 17 points going 7-of-11 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and three steals, while Hatcher chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds for the Owls.

The Owls return to action on Nov. 21 with an away game against Post University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
