KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team competed in the United State Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Owls received several strong performances, including a first-place showing from Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) in the 400-yard IM.
Junior Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.) kicked off the action with a third place finish in the grueling 500-yard freestyle. He completed the fourth event of the competition with a time of 5:01.40.
Sophomore sensation Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.) followed Hardy’s performance with a stellar routine of his own. He completed the 100-yard backstroke in 55.11, good enough for third place in the event. Sorena wrapped up the swimming portion of the meet, taking the gold in the 400-yard IM (4:18.25).
Freshman Alan Dickey (Waterbury, Conn.) and Ryan Cutler (Mystic, Conn.) each performed very well in the diving portion of the competition. Dickey captured first in both the one- and three-meter diving events (278.78, 272.10), while Cutler finished right behind him with scores of 194.63 and 171.98.
The Owls return to action on Nov. 23 with an away meet at Yale University. The meet kicks off at 4 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
