MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team claimed their final Northeast-10 regular season match on Tuesday night, defeating Saint Anselm in three sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-9. Senior Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, Conn.) and sophomore Megan Lyons (Cold Spring, N.Y.) led the team offensively with 10 kills each as the Owls improved to 9-6 in the conference and 23-9 overall. With the loss, the Hawks have fallen to 1-12 in the NE-10 and 5-17 overall.

Southern never trailed on Tuesday night, winning easily in three sets. They began the match by scoring the first four points and never looked back.

The Hawks tied the match just once during the second set at nine a piece. However, that would be the closet they would come as Southern tallied four straight points to win the set before running away with game three.

As a team, the Owls recorded a .318 hitting percentage compared to their opponents .041. Mendizabal and Lyons were key contributors to the high percentage, as they converted on 53% and 38% of their attacks respectively.

Freshman Kimberly Lachowicz (Mansfield, Texas) set up the offensive attack once again, dishing a game-high 23 assists. She added eight digs as well in a defensive effort. Senior Jenna Tammel (Spring Valley, Minn.) and freshman Vanessa Sullivan (Paramus, N.J.) recorded 11 and 10 digs respectively for the Owls.

Southern now ranks eighth in the Northeast-10 standings but without anymore conference matches, they must wait to see if they earn their first tournament bid.

The Owls return to action on Saturday as they travel to New Jersey for the team’s final two regular season contests against Holy Family (2 p.m.) and Felician (4 p.m.).
