Complete NSCAA All-East Region Selections
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four members of the Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team have earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) laurels for the 2009 season, announced on Monday by the league office. Sophomore Germain Delage (Paris, France) was selected to the NSCAA First Team, sophomores Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) and Harry Appiah (Pawtucket, R.I.) were named to the NSCAA Second Team, while senior Sean O’Brien (Guilford, Conn.) and junior Victor Hernandez (Rye Brook, N.Y.) collected NSCAA Third Team honors.
Delage helped lead the Owls to six defensive shutouts this season and limited opponents to a 0.95 goals per game average. After battling injuries for much of the 2008 season, Delage bounced back and became a potent member of the Owls’ backline. In addition, he was able to chip in offensively, scoring a goal at New Haven in a 4-3 victory.
In his second season with the Owls, Templeton finished with seven goals and three assists, leading the team with 17 total points. He was named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll three times this season and his seven goals placed him in the top 10 in the league. Templeton also served as a co-captain for the Owls.
Appiah and his speed down the left side proved to be an invaluable asset for Coach Tom Lang and the Owls. He registered five goals and four assists for a total of 14 points in his first season with the program. His season highlight came at Molloy when he recorded a hat trick in a 6-1 thrashing.
O’Brien has participated in 83 games, including 81 starts for the Owls during his career. A team captain and defensive force, O’Brien has been a major part of 51 victories over these past three seasons. This is his third straight season earning All-Conference Second Team honors.
Hernandez was a key component of the Owls’ midfield this season. In his first season with the club, Hernandez participated in all 21 games, including 20 starts. He concluded the regular season with five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points. The midfielder from Rye Brook, N.Y. posted two-goal games against Post and Southern New Hampshire, recording the game-winner in both contests.
