Laura Brustolon Named Northeast-10 Women's Athlete of the Year

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s cross-country team was named the Northeast-10 Women’s Athlete of the Year, as announced Wednesday by the Northeast-10 Conference. Brustolon had a stellar 2009 season in her last year as an Owl which included a trip to the NCAA National Championships, winning a Northeast-10 Championship and an All-Region selection among others. She also had the top two finishes in the conference all season and set Southern team records in the process.
Brustolon started the 2009 season strong by winning the Connecticut College Invitational and setting a new course record with a time of 21:49.
She followed that up with a fourth place finish at the New England Championships in which her mark of 18:06 was the fastest time for an Owl at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Also, the fourth place finish was the highest by a Southern women’s cross country runner ever at the New England Championships.
Brustolon won the Northeast-10 Championships the following meet in 18:03.8 to become the first Northeast-10 women’s cross country champion in school history.
At the squad’s next event, she earned First Team All-Region honors as she placed third overall at the NCAA Division II East Regionals and advanced to the NCAA National Championships with her time of 22:31.4.
At the National Championships, Brustolon missed out on All-America honors by two spots as she placed 42nd overall out of 184 runners with a time of 22:02.2.
