NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team split a Northeast-10 doubleheader with Pace on Friday afternoon at Pelz Field. The Owls snatched game one by the final score of 5-4, but fell short in game two, 4-3. With the split, Southern is now 21-7 on the season, 10-4 in Northeast-10 action, while the Setters remain just under .500 at 12-13, 6-4 in the league.

Game one featured a quick start from the Setters of Pace University. In the top of the third, three consecutive hits from the Kerri McLean, Christina Pane and Amanda Dague loaded the bases with one out. Patricia Hurley proceeded to launch a grandslam over the fence in leftfield for an early 4-0 Setter advantage.

Monica Savarese (Orange, Conn.) would get the Owls going in the bottom half of the fourth with a leadoff double to leftfield. Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) advanced Savarese to third with a base knock up the middle, giving Southern first and third with no one out. Coach Lisa Barbaro signaled for a double-steal that worked perfectly, pushing Savarese across the plate for the first run.

Freshman Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) was called on to pinch run for Caporossi and advanced third on deep fly ball from Brittany Gandley (Holbrook, N.Y.). Co-captain Christina Wolf (Newtown, Conn.) stepped into the batters box and punched a base hit to right, pushing Pagano across for the second Owl run.

In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Shawna Mallory (Simi Valley, Calif.), Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) and Savarese all singled to load the bases for Caporossi. The shortstop came through again with a shot up the middle bringing in two more runs to tie the game at four apiece.

Neither team could break the deadlock at the end of regulation, forcing extra innings to decide the outcome. In the 10th inning, Caporossi was placed on second due to the international tie-breaker rule. Caporossi, always alert on the base path, took third base on a wild pitch, placing the winning run just 60 feet away. Wolf was hit-by-pitch and stole second, bringing Iacomini to the plate. Iacomini laced a game-winning RBI single down the leftfield line for the emphatic 5-4 victory.

Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) tossed 10 innings, allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out a season-high nine batters for her eighth win of the season. Larson is 5-1 over her last six appearances for the Owls.

In game two, the Owls had to play catch-up as featured in game one. The Setters jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings of play and tacked on one more in the seventh. Southern continuously put runners on base, however could not push them across home plate.

The Owls entered the bottom half of the seventh inning with zeros across the scoreboard, when finally their offense came to life. Lee, Caporossi and Gandley all reached base bringing Wolf to the plate. Wolf hit an RBI ground out to short cutting the Pace lead to 4-1. On deck anxiously waiting was Pagano, who progressed to rip a two-run single to right field inching the Owls to within one run. Despite the valiant comeback, Southern left the bases loaded to end the game, suffering a 4-3 loss.

Southern is back in action on April 11 with a doubleheader at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
