NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two members of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s swimming and diving team – Rachel Heyer (Stratford, Conn.) and Maria Zenoni (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) – have been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team. This marks this third straight year that they have earned the prestigious honor.
To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 All-Academic Teams are chosen by a vote of the Northeast-10 Sports Information Directors.
Heyer, a two-time All-American, won a combined five events at last year’s Northeast-10 Championships (two individual events, three relays). Earlier this year, she was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay squad at the NE-10 Championships. Last year, she also captured both the 50 and 100 freestyle at the NE-10's and was a part of the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams that all finished as champions.
Zenoni, a CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Second-Team Academic All-District pick, capped a stellar career in the pool during the 2008-09 campaign. She earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 400 individual medley at the 2009 NCAA Championships. In addition, she also won the 200 breaststroke and had a hand in the winning 400 medley relay at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.
Zenoni also won seven Northeast-10 Championship and two Metropolitan Conference titles during her career. She was also named the 2008 Female Athlete of the Year by the Dominican Swimming Federation after capturing the 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke at the 2008 Caribbean Island Championships. SCSU won four Northeast-10 team titles and two Metropolitan Conference crowns during her collegiate career.
