6/26/2009 10:41:56 AM
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second consecutive year, Sutton Underwood (Norwalk, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University men’s track and field team has earned Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Track and Field All-Academic Team honors. Underwood enjoyed an outstanding senior season in 2008-09, which included All-America laurels in the pole vault during the indoor track campaign.
To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 All-Academic Teams are chosen by a vote of the Northeast-10 Sports Information Directors.
Underwood, an art major with a 3.66 grade point average, qualified for the NCAA Championships during both the indoor and outdoor campaigns. He placed seventh indoors and become the first Owl pole vaulter since 1995 to earn All-America honors. During the outdoor season, he was the Northeast-10 Champion and an All-New England pick in the pole vault. For his efforts, he was named the Outdoor Regional Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
