NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two members of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s track and field team – sophomore Shaina Barr (Manchester, Conn.) and junior Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) – have been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Track and Field All-Academic Team.
To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 All-Academic Teams are chosen by a vote of the Northeast-10 Sports Information Directors.
Barr, a nursing major with a 3.47 grade point average, enjoyed a strong sophomore season for the Owls in 2008-09. She was a NCAA qualifier in the 4x400 relay during the indoor season, a campaign in which she also took home All-New England honors. During the outdoor season, she placed second in the 400 meters at the Northeast-10 Championships.
Taylor, a business major with a 3.38 GPA, was selected to the All-Academic Team for the second straight year. She had a tremendous indoor season before being slowed during the outdoor slate. Taylor took home All-America honors in the 60 hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships and was also named the Regional Women’s Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Taylor was also selected as the Most Valuable Indoor Track Athlete for the 2009 campaign by the Northeast-10.
In addition, Taylor also won the New England and Northeast-10 Championships in the 55 hurdles and was All-New England in the 4x400 relay.
