NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University head softball coach Lisa Barbaro has announced that seniors Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.), Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.), Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) will serve as team captains for the Owls this spring.
Caporossi, a three-time All-Northeast-10 Conference selection, led the Owls in several statistical categories last season. She closed out the regular season with 47 hits in 138 at-bats (.341) and led the team in RBI (35), runs scored (28), total bases (78) and triples (7). Her 17 stolen bases ranked third in the Northeast-10 Conference and set a new record in SCSU history. Caporossi also recorded four homeruns, five doubles and tallied 12 walks on the season.
Flood started in all 48 games that she participated in last season. The center fielder accumulated a batting average of .276, coupled with 13 RBI and a .338 on-base-percentage. In addition to her offensive capabilities, her defense was stellar as well. She finished second on the team with a .975 fielding percentage, including two assists from the outfield.
Iacomini, an All-Region and All-Conference performer in 2009, served as the team’s ace last season. She led the pitching staff in several statistical categories including complete games (6), innings pitched (122.2), shutouts (4), strikeouts (86) and held opposing batters to a batting average of .231. Furthermore, she was a key component of the club’s offense as well. Iacomini led the team with nine homeruns and was third in runs scored (29) and RBI (29). She collected 80 total bases and accumulated a team-leading slugging percentage of .567.
Lee served as a formidable asset behind the plate last season. She caught 9-of-26 runners stealing (36 %) and only allowed three passed balls all season. Offensively, Lee carried a .270 batting average with 12 RBI, 30 runs scored, six doubles, two homeruns and completed the season with a .358 slugging percentage.
The Owls will open the 2010 campaign on March 8 at home against Bridgeport. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Pelz Field.
