NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) won two events on Sunday afternoon, but the Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team was defeated by Connecticut College and Maine in a tri-meet at Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn. The Camels topped Southern, 168-114, while Maine edged the Owls by the final score of 152-128.

After back-to-back third place showings in the first two events, the Owls garnered their first victory in the 200-yard freestyle. Sorena defeated the field with a time of 1:45.79, whereas fellow classmates Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) and Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.) followed closely behind for second and third place in the event.

Midway through the competition, Nesrala captured second place showings in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. He finished with times of 22.01 and 47.63 respectively.

In the 24th event of the meet, Sorena took home his second victory of the day in the 500-yard freestyle (4:41.19). Mizzell finished right behind Sorena (4:51.48), and later capped off the scoring for the Owls with a first place performance in the 200-yard IM (2:04.04).

In the diving portion of the competition, Senior Ryan Cutler (Mystic, Conn.) posted a score of 202.95 in the one-meter event, good enough for first in the segment.

The Owls return to action on Jan. 23 with a dual competition against West Chester. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Hutchinson Natatorium.
