Women's Swimming and Diving Sweeps Tri-Meet At Connecticut College

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Amanda Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) won three events on Sunday afternoon, as the Southern Connecticut State University women’s swimming and diving team swept Connecticut College and Maine in a tri-meet at Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn. The Owls defeated the Camels by the final score of 152-145 and the Black Bears, 162-132.
Senior Emily Sundel (West Hartford, Conn.) opened the individual portion of the competition with a first place showing in the 1000-yard freestyle. She posted a time of 10:46.72, granting the Owls an early lead.
After second and third place performances from Cody Hall (Parker Colo.) and Nicole Huerta (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Thomas collected her first triumph of the afternoon. She won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.51.
Junior Jennifer O’Neil (Stratford, Conn.) captured the next win for the Owls in the ninth event of the meet. O’Neil defeated the field in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.15.
Southern sealed the deal winning the final six events of the competition. Thomas won the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.87) and the 200-yard IM (2:12.25), O’Neil took first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.99), Hall captured the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.06) and sophomore diver Amanda Burden (Orange, Conn.) won the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 247.70 and 275.10.
The Owls return to action on Jan. 23 with a dual competition against West Chester. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Hutchinson Natatorium.
