Owls To Host Blue Crew T-Shirt Giveaway, CHET College Tipoff Event At Wednesday's Basketball Doubleheader
2/1/2010 4:38:54 PM
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University athletic department will host two promotional events in conjunction with Wednesday’s basketball doubleheader against LeMoyne (5:30 p.m., women; 7:30 p.m., men). The first 50 fans in attendance at each game will receive a ‘Blue Crew’ t-shirt courtesy of the athletic department. In addition, the Owls will also host a Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET) College Tipoff event at the doubleheader. Children in grades K-6 can be entered at the CHET checkpoint table to participate in a basketball shooting contest to be held at halftime. Three children will be chosen at random and invited on court. The child who shoots the most baskets in 30 seconds will win a free CHET sweatshirt. As always, admission is free to all SCSU basketball contests.
Established in 1997, CHET has grown to more than $1.140 billion in assets and now represents more than 88,000 individual accounts (October 31, 2009)). It is the only 529 college savings plan that provides the opportunity for a Connecticut state income tax deduction for state income taxpayers.
CHET is Connecticut’s official 529 College Savings Plan that provides families of all household incomes and backgrounds with an affordable way to help save for higher education expenses. Anyone with a Social Security Number or federal Taxpayer Identification Number can open a CHET account for as little as $25 per investment option, regardless of income or state residence ($15 per investment option if their employer offers payroll deduction).
TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc. (TFI) serves as Program Manager for CHET. TFI is part of the TIAA-CREF group of companies. TIAA-CREF has been providing financial services and investment experience for 90 years. Their combined assets under management equate to approximately $402 billion (as of September 30, 2009) and they are best known as the leading provider of retirement services in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields. The CHET program was established in 1997, and has now grown to more than $1.140 billion in assets and now represents more than 88,000 individual accounts (October 31, 2009). Connecticut State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier serves as Trustee of CHET and has been granted the authority to oversee the program.
The program Web site, www.aboutchet.com, provides complete information, online enrollment and other online services. Applications and information about how to sign up for automatic payroll deduction can also be obtained through a customer service center at 1-888-799-2438.
