NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scored a game-high 22 points on Wednesday night as the Southern Connecticut State University men’s basketball team fell short of upsetting Le Moyne at Moore Field House, 67-64. The Owls led by as much as 10 in the second half but a late surge by the Dolphins completed their sweep over Southern.

With the loss, the Owls are now 2-19 overall and 1-15 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Le Moyne improved to 13-8 and 9-7 in conference play.

The first half was competitive right from the start. In the first 10 minutes, there were four lead changes and one tie. A three from Carberry jump started a 9-0 run as the Owls claimed an eight-point lead at the 5:50 mark. The Dolphins, however, would cut the deficit to one at the half, 27-26.

Carberry led all scorers at the break with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting and was perfect from downtown (3-for-3). Laurence Ekperigin and Chris Johnson led Le Moyne with eight points each.

The final twenty minutes of regulation left off the way the first half ended. Both teams exchanged baskets within the first four minutes until the Owls took control and went ahead by seven with 13:40 remaining. Sophomore forward Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) gave the Owls momentum after hitting center John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) with an assist down low for an easy lay-up.

At the 9:17 mark, freshman Brandon Ennis (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) hit a free throw to give Southern its largest lead of the game, 51-41. The Owls maintained a lead for over 11 minutes in the second half until a three-pointer by Kevin Hassett put Le Moyne back on top with 4:20 left. The Dolphins would go on to win by the score of 67-64.

Graduate forward Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and John Mazzarella scored 14 and 12 points respectively. Chapman also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, as well as Ramsey. Sophomore guard Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out a game-high six assists. As a team, the Owls went 6-for-12 from downtown.

Southern returns to the court this Saturday as they head across town to visit New Haven at Charger Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
