Men's Swimming and Diving In Second Place After Day One of the NE-10 Championships

Day One Results
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team put forth several fine showings in the opening day of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at the Hutchinson Natatorium on Friday night. The Owls trail Bentley by 42.5 points, clinging to the number two slot with 227 points. Saint Rose rounds out the top three with 159.5 points and is followed by Adelphi (124), Saint Michael’s (122), LeMoyne (112) and Pace (67).
The Owls opened the competition with a first place performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.), Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.), Christopher Wright (Prospect, Conn.) and Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.) earned the Owls 40 points, defeating the rest of the field with a time of 1:25.87. The time set a new Northeast-10 Conference record and met the NCAA ‘A’ Cut qualifying mark.
In the next event, a trio of Owls captured the top three slots in the 200-yard freestyle event. Sorena won the heat with a time of 4:36.28, setting a new Northeast-10 Conference record and meeting the NCAA ‘A’ Cut qualifying time. Michael DiVerniero (East Haven, Conn.) snatched second with a time of 4:47.86 and Hardy grabbed third place (4:51.06).
In the eighth event of the meet, Nesrala set a new Northeast-10 Conference record and made an NCAA ‘B’ Cut in the 50-yard freestyle. He finished the heat with a time of 21.14.
In the last event of the night, a quartet of Owls captured the 400-yard medley relay race. Nesrala, Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) Sorena and Hardy combined for a time of 3:29.62.
SCSU will compete in day two of the three day tournament tomorrow, Feb. 6 at the Hutchinson Natatorium. The preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. and the final rounds will commence at 6 p.m.
