Day One Results
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women’s swimming and diving team won six events in the first day of the Northeast-10 Championships for an early lead on Friday night at the Hutchinson Natatorium. Southern finished the night with 320 points, followed by Saint Rose with 200.5, LeMoyne (166), Bentley (161.5), Pace (151), Saint Michael’s (95), Assumption (89) and Adelphi (55).
The Owls opened the competition with a strong performance in the 200-yard freestyle event. Christine Slie (Wallingford, Conn.), Amanda Thomas (Oakville, Conn.), Jennifer O’Neil (Stratford, Conn.) and Nicole Huerta (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each combined for a time of 1:38.98, good enough for an NCAA ‘A’ Cut qualifying time.
Huerta and Thomas followed the relay triumph with two individual first place showings. Huerta won the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.25) and Thomas collected the 200-yard IM (2:04.89). Huerta notched an NCAA ‘B’ Cut qualifying time, while Thomas’ time clipped an NCAA ‘A’ Cut and a new Northeast-10 Conference record.
The Owls wrapped up the first finals session with victories in the 50-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay. O’Neil’s time of 24.62 marked an NCAA ‘B’ Cut qualifying time in the event. In the 400-yard medley relay (3:52.41), a quartet of Owls combined for an NCAA ‘A’ Cut qualifying time and a new Northeast-10 Conference record.
In the diving portion of the competition, sophomore Amanda Burden (Orange, Conn.) took home the gold with a score of 400.60. Burden set a new Northeast-10 Conference record with her mark in the one-meter event.
SCSU will compete in day two of the three day tournament tomorrow, Feb. 6 at the Hutchinson Natatorium. The preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. and the final rounds will commence at 6 p.m.
