WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University men’s basketball team poured in a game-high 26 points, but the Owls were defeated by New Haven, 62-47, on Saturday evening at Charger Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Owls dropped to 2-20, 1-16 in the Northeast-10 Conference. New Haven improved to 3-18, 3-14 in the league.

Despite shooting 31 percent from the field, the Owls managed to keep the game within reach through tough defense. In the opening stanza, Carberry led all scorers with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and knocked down two from outside the arc. Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) added six points of his own, as the Owls trailed 28-22 after the first 20 minutes of action.

Shooting woes continued to plague the Owls, as the team finished 16-of-55 from the floor. UNH raced out on a 14-4 run after the intermission, extending its lead to 16 points. Carberry and the Owls tried to chip away at their deficit, but a tenacious Chargers’ defense prohibited any sort of run.

Carberry finished with 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting and grabbed three rebounds for the Owls. Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tossed in six points and pulled down five boards, while John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) cleaned the glass with 10 rebounds.

The Owls return to action on Feb. 9 with an away game against Pace University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in New York, N.Y.
