Day Two Results
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team maintained its second place position in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Saturday night at Hutchinson Natatorium. Bentley held on to the first place slot with a total score of 585.5, and is followed by SCSU (503), Saint Rose (355.5), Adelphi (323), Saint Michael’s (298), LeMoyne (292) and Pace (90).
In the first event of the evening, four Owls were triumphant in the 200-yard medley relay race. Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.), Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) and Steven Cusano (Plainville, Conn.) combined for a time of 1:36.41, granting SCSU 40 points.
After a second place showing from Thomas Kuhn (Yakima, Wash.) in the 400-yard IM (4:02.04), Sorena found the winner circle once again with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly event. Sorena defeated the rest of the field with a time of 52.71
In the fourth event of the evening, Nesrala added 20 points to the Owls’ total with a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle event Nesrala swam the finals heat in 1:40.71, collecting an NCAA ‘B’ Cut qualifying time in the process.
In the next event, Mizzell put 20 points on the board with another first place showing. Mizzell made an NCAA ‘B’ Cut qualifying time, completing the finals heat in 57.53.
In the last event of the night, a quartet of Owls set a new Northeast-10 Conference record and a Hutchinson Natatorium pool record in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Nesrala, Sorena, Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.) and Mizzell combined for a time of 6:53.19.
The Northeast-10 Conference Championships continue on Sunday, Feb. 7 at the Hutchinson Natatorium. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with finals to follow at 6 p.m.
