NE-10 Championship Results
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team captured second place in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Sunday night at Hutchinson Natatorium. Bentley won the competition with a final score of 818.5, followed by SCSU (743), Saint Rose (526.5), Adelphi (457), LeMoyne (420), Saint Michael’s (405) and Pace (131).
The Owls wasted little time scoring points in the night session, as a trio of swimmers captured the top three spots in the opening event. Michael DiVerniero (East Haven, Conn.) took the gold in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:44.18, while Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.) and Timothy Steiskal (Naugatuck, Conn.) followed closely behind.
Two events later, Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.) took home another gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle event. Nesrala defeated the rest of the field with a time of 45.84, notching an NCAA ‘B’ Cut qualifying time.
Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) made it back-to-back victories with a strong showing in the 200-yard breaststroke event. Mizzell, nearly reset his Northeast-10 Conference record (set earlier in the preliminary session (2:02.94)), completing the heat with a time of 2:04.33. Both times earned him an NCAA ‘A’ Cut qualifying mark.
In the next event, the Owls completed another Southern sweep in the 200-yard butterfly. Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) led the way with a time of 1:56.27, whereas Thomas Kuhn (Yakima, Wash.) and DiVerniero took home second and third places respectively.
The Owls concluded the competition with a first place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Owls return to action on Feb. 20 when the team kicks off the Metropolitan Championships in Piscataway, N.J. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. with finals to follow at 5 p.m.
