Women's Swimming and Diving Captures Northeast-10 Conference Title

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the seventh consecutive season, the Southern Connecticut State University women’s swimming and diving team was crowned the Northeast-10 Conference Champion, as the Owls outlasted seven teams on Sunday night at Hutchinson Natatorium. Southern finished the competition with a total score of 988.5 points, followed by Saint Rose (732), LeMoyne (524), Bentley (483), Pace (387), Assumption (306), Saint Michael’s (271) and Adelphi (164).
In the afternoon diving session, sophomore Amanda Burden (Orange, Conn.) captured her second victory of the tournament. Burden posted a score of 396.90 in the three-meter diving event, setting a new NE-10 Conference record. In addition for her performances, Burden was selected the Northeast-10 Conference Championship’s Most Valuable Diver.
In the night session, senior Emily Sundel (West Hartford, Conn.) set the tone early on for the Owls. Sundel completed the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:20.43, granting Southern 20 quick points. Her time set a new Northeast-10 Conference record and made an NCAA ‘A’ Cut qualifying mark. Fellow teammate Nicole Huerta (Santo Domingo, D.R.) also joined the awards ceremony, taking third place in the event (17:34.81).
In the ensuing event, freshman Amanda Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) continued her Northeast-10 Championship successes with another victory. Thomas collected the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.12), setting a new NE-10 Conference record and meeting the NCAA ‘A’ Cut qualifying time in the process. Furthermore for her performances this weekend, Thomas was named the Northeast-10 Conference Championship’s Most Valuable Swimmer.
Cody Hall (Parker, Colo.) and Jennifer O’Neil (Stratford, Conn.) added to the winning streak, notching first place showings in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke events. Hall posted a time of 53.16, making the NCAA ‘B’ Cut qualifying mark, while O’Neil’s time of 2:20.21 set new Northeast-10 Conference and Hutchinson Natatorium records.
After a third place performance from Sarah Thomas (Naugatuck, Conn.) in the 200-yard butterfly, the Owls wrapped up the competition with a second place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay event.
The Owls return to action on Feb. 20 when the team kicks off the Metropolitan Championships in Piscataway, N.J. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. with finals to follow at 5 p.m.
