Day One Results
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four members of the Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team traveled to Canton, Ohio on Wednesday to compete in day one action at the NCAA Division II Swimming Championships. Sophomores Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) and Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each fared well in their respective events for the Owls.
Drury is currently in first place with 79 points, followed by the University of Incarnate Word (73) and Ouachita (68).
Sorena opened the competition with strong showing in the 1000-yard freestyle event. He swam the heat in 9:30.87, taking 20th amongst the nation’s strongest competitors.
Nesrala captured the first All-America honor in the next event, finishing 14th in the 50-yard freestyle. Nesrala earned three points for the Owls and an All-America honorable mention.
Southern wrapped up the first day with a solid effort in the 200-yard Medley Relay. Nesrala, Sorena, Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) and Michael DiVerniero (East Haven, Conn.) combined for a time of 1:36.08, taking 19th in the event.
The championships continue on Thursday, March 11 with day two of competition in Canton, Ohio. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., with the finals session to begin at 6 p.m.
