NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team continued its success early on at Pelz Field, defeating NYIT on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Owls took game one by the final score of 12-0 and game two, 7-5. With the wins, SCSU improved to 7-3 on the season.
After a scoreless top half of the first inning, freshman Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) got things started for the Owls in the bottom half of the inning. Bucko led off with a double and moved to third on an infield single from Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.). In the ensuing at-bat., Lee stole second, allowing Bucko to come home from third on the throw.
Kerry Iacomini (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.), Meryl Ragaini (Seymour, Conn.) and Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) each followed with hits, leading to four more runs for the Owls. After the first inning, Southern controlled a 5-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the second, Bucko extended the lead to 6-0 with her fourth homerun of the season. Lee, Downs and Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.) would add three more runs on two hits and a double, granting the Owls a commanding 9-0 advantage.
The Owls added three more runs in the fourth, which was more than enough for starting pitcher Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.). Larson tossed a complete game shutout, allowed no runs on three hits and struck out six in her third win of the season.
Game two featured a one-two-three top of the first inning, followed by a leadoff homerun from Bucko. Bucko’s fifth of the season gave the Owls an early 1-0 advantage.
The Bears bounced back in the second inning, retaking the lead with three runs of their own. Brooklynn Fields provided the big hit with a two-run shot to center field. NYIT carried a 3-1 heading into the bottom of the second inning.
After a scoreless second, the Owls collected their second run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Lee drove in Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.) from third, cutting their deficit to just one run.
In the ensuing inning, Southern regained the lead, 4-3, with two more runs. Ragaini, Whitley and Flood all reached base with two outs in the frame. Pouliot pinch ran for Ragaini and crossed home plate on a walk to Bucko. Lee was then hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, bringing home the go-ahead run for the Owls.
Southern once again held the Bears scoreless in the inning, leading to an explosive offensive bottom half. The Owls scored three more runs on three hits, extending their lead to 7-3. Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.), Iacomini Ragaini (double) and Whitley all tallied hits in the frame.
Larson, Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn.) and Iacomini combined to pitch at seven innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits. Iacomini was credited with the victory.
The Owls return to action on March 20 for a doubleheader against Georgian Court. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
