Three Owls Honored With Selection To Northeast-10 Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seniors Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) and Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.), along with sophomore Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.) of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s outdoor track and field team, have been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team.
To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.
Both Brustolon and Taylor were also honored earlier this month as Academic All-District selections by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Brustolon was named to the First-Team, while Taylor was tabbed for the Second-Team.
Brustolon and Taylor were also named to the Northeast-10 Women’s Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team earlier this year.
Brustolon, who also earned Northeast-10 Women’s Cross Country and Women’s Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team laurels, as well as the inaugural Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award, was a NCAA qualifier during the cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field campaigns. She also won the New England championship in the 5,000 meters and was the Northeast-10 Conference Champion in the mile indoors and outdoors. Brustolon also earned All-New England honors in the 1,500 meters during the outdoor season.
Brustolon was biology major with a 3.86 cumulative grade point average.
Taylor earned All-America honors in the 60 hurdles this winter and finished her career as a three-time All-American. The 2010 USTFCCA Regional Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, she also qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships in the 100 and 400 hurdles. Taylor finished as the runner-up in the 400 hurdles at the 2010 New England Outdoor Championships. She was also the 2010 Northeast-10 champion in the 55 hurdles (indoors) and the 100 and 400 hurdles (outdoors) and also earned All-New England honors in the 4x400 and the 55 hurdles during the indoor season. Taylor also earned Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Track and Field All-Academic Team honors for the third straight year.
Taylor was an accounting major with a 3.34 cumulative grade point average.
Bell enjoyed a breakout outdoor campaign that saw her win three events (100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 relay) in helping the Owls win the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. She followed that up by earning All-New England honors in three events at the New England Championships.
Bell is a nursing major with a 3.52 cumulative grade point average.
