NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seniors Michael DiVerniero (East Haven, Conn.) and Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.) have been selected as the captains of the Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team, as announced today by Head Coach Tim Quill. The Owls, who finished second at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships last season, will look to earn the conference crown for the seventh time in the past eight campaigns.
DiVerniero earned All-America laurels in the 800-yard freestyle relay last season. He was also an individual Northeast-10 Champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay. For his academic efforts, DiVerniero was a member of the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2009-10.
A four-time individual Northeast-10 Champion last season, Hardy was the conference’s best in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and 800-yard freestyle relay.
The Owls will begin the upcoming campaign at Hutchinson Natatorium on Oct. 16 with their annual Alumni Meet. The season’s home slate is highlighted by showdowns with conference foe Saint Rose as well as Yale, The College of New Jersey, Connecticut College and Queens College. The Hutch will also be the site of the 2010-11 Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Feb. 4-6.
