NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Five members of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s track and field team – Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.), Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.), Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.), Alasia Griebel (Bristol, Conn.) and Kimberly Johnson (Lisbon, Conn.) – have been named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s All-Academic Track and Field Team.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either the NCAA Division II indoor or outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard.
Both Brustolon and Taylor were also honored earlier this summer as Academic All-District selections by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Brustolon was named to the First-Team, while Taylor was tabbed for the Second-Team. The duo was also selected to both the Northeast-10 Women’s Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Teams earlier this year.
Brustolon, who also earned Northeast-10 Women’s Cross Country and Women’s Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team laurels, as well as the inaugural Women’s Cross Country and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, was a NCAA qualifier during the cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field campaigns. She also won the New England championship in the 5,000 meters and was the Northeast-10 Conference Champion in the mile indoors and outdoors. Brustolon also earned All-New England honors in the 1,500 meters during the outdoor season.
Taylor earned All-America honors in the 60 hurdles this past winter and finished her career as a three-time All-American. The 2010 USTFCCA Regional Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, she also qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships in the 100 and 400 hurdles. Taylor finished as the runner-up in the 400 hurdles at the 2010 New England Outdoor Championships. She was also the 2010 Northeast-10 champion in the 55 hurdles (indoors) and the 100 and 400 hurdles (outdoors) and also earned All-New England honors in the 4x400 and the 55 hurdles during the indoor season. Taylor also earned Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Track and Field All-Academic Team honors for the third straight year.
Bell enjoyed a breakout outdoor campaign that saw her win three events (100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 relay) in helping the Owls win the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. She followed that up by earning All-New England honors in three events at the New England Championships. She was a NCAA provisional qualifier during the season.
Griebel was the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference indoor champion in the 1,000 meters and finished as the runner-up in the 1,500 meters at the outdoor championships. She also ran a leg of the first-place 4x800 relay squad at the outdoor championships. She was a NCAA provisional qualifier during the season.
Johnson was a presence in the pole vault during the outdoor season. She was the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference outdoor champion in that event and also collected All-New England laurels. She was a NCAA provisional qualifier during the season.
